Refinish & Reupholster An Old Fireplace Bench

Deej shows you how to revitalize and give new life to an old bench.

I recently decided to move ahead with reupholstering and refinishing the bench shown below. I found some great fabric at Joann Fabrics (50% off!!!)  and I already had some wood stain from a previous project. After measuring the bench top to determine how much fabric I needed, I turned it over to see if the legs were removable. It was then that I noticed a label underneath that said “Michigan Chair Company” and had a handwritten number on it. I decided to go online and do some research to see if I could find out more information about the piece. Although the company stopped selling furniture in early 1970s I still found out a wealth of information. As a matter of fact I found the original catalog when this piece was sold…back in 1926! I knew the bench was a few decades old but was shocked to find out its 90 years old!! Its clearly well-built and extremely sturdy after nine decades.
